New directions for top quark polarization in thet-channel process

THE ROLE OF QUARK POLARIZATION IN HEAVY QUARK FRAGMENTATION
We calculate the exact fragmentation functions for c and b quark fragmentation taking into account the spin orientation of the initial heavy quark in the form of analytical and rather simple expressions. Our calculations show that spin orientation may have an important effect on the fragmentation spectrum. This effect is more striking in the cases of c ?D, D*; c? ? , ? , and ?B , B *.

The top quark is expected to decay as a free particle with definite momentum and polarization. Here we consider the possibilities to obtain information about its polarization through the energy and angular distributions of the b-quarks from the decay of the top-quarks produced in e + e − annihilation. Analytic expressions and numerical estimates for different beam polarizations are derived.

We derive a simple analytic expression for q ¯ q, gg → t ¯ t → bW + ¯ bW − → b ¯ lν l ¯ bl ′ ¯ ν l ′ for on shell intermediate states with the interference effects due to the polarizations of the t and ¯ t. We then investigate how this effect may be measured at Tevatron or other hadronic colliders.
